Sixth Annual Saint Clare's Walk
for Breast Cancer Awareness Set for September 16
MORRIS and SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ —
August 24, 2007 — For
the sixth consecutive year, residents from throughout northwestern
New Jersey will join Saint Clare's Health System for the annual
Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness on Sunday, September
16 at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall. This year's event, sponsored
by Commerce Bank, sanofi aventis, WMTR-WDHA, Atlantic NeuroSurgical
Specialists and The Donald and Evelyn Spiro Foundation and again
hosted by the Township of Rockaway, Simon Property Group, and the
Hilton Garden Inn, Rockaway, promises to be an overwhelming success.
The Walk, which benefits the Women's Health
Center at Saint Clare's Hospital/Dover, takes place just
prior to the start of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in
October. Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer
among women in the United States, with about 180,000 women diagnosed
each year. In 2006, more than 300 walkers united to raise $75,000,
bringing the total to more than $250,000 raised in support of the
Women's Health Center since the event began in 2002. This year's
proceeds will be again be earmarked for the purchase of new sterotactic
biopsy equipment, a "gold standard" in diagnostic tools for breast
cancer, and associated equipment.
"Saint Clare's is grateful for the support and leadership of our
presenting sponsors, the event's organizing committee, the Rockaway
Townsquare Mall, the Hilton Garden Inn, and our volunteers and walkers
who will make this year's event the biggest yet," said Gary J. Blan,
President and CEO of Saint Clare's Health System. "Together with
Saint Clare's, our community is truly making a statement in support
of preventing and treating this devastating disease. With the charitable
hospitality of Mayor Louis Sceusi and the Rockaway community, we
look forward to joining family and friends on September 16th for
a day full of fun and fitness to help in the battle against breast
cancer."
Check-in and same-day registration will begin at 7:00 a.m. at the
Hilton Garden Inn, Rockaway. The start of the Walk will
take place at 8:30 a.m., preceded by a special survivor recognition
ceremony at 8 a.m. The Walk will follow a 5K route on the
mall property. Following the Walk, participants will return
to the Hilton Garden Inn for a continental breakfast. Cancer survivors
attending the event will have the opportunity to register as survivors,
be recognized for their courage, and will lead the participants
in the Walk.
Leading this year's event will be its chair, Ruth E. Wilson, Commerce
Bank's Vice President of Morris County Division, along with a core
group of cancer survivors and their loved ones. The Mary Mulholland
Spirit Award, given annually in recognition of outstanding volunteer
leadership and support of The Women's Health Center, will
be awarded at the event.
Registration for the Walk is underway, and forms can be
obtained by calling Saint Clare's Foundation at 973-983-5300. Interested
individuals can download registration forms or register online at

Incentive prizes are available for adult walkers who raise
a minimum of $100, and for youth walkers under 18 who raise
a minimum of $50. Corporate sponsorships are still available. Prizes
will be awarded to the top youth and adult walkers, and
a 50/50 raffle drawing will be held immediately following the Walk.
